EWEC and Emirates Nature-WWF Announce Landmark Collaboration to Drive Conservation in the UAE on Earth Day 2025

EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company), a leading company in the integrated planning, purchasing, supply, and system despatch services of water and electricity across the UAE, and Emirates Nature-WWF, the UAE’s environmental NGO, have announced a landmark collaboration to scale up conservation impact in the UAE and reinforce Abu Dhabi’s leadership in protecting ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity, and strengthening climate resilience.

Through this strategic alliance, EWEC and Emirates Nature-WWF will champion conservation efforts across five key pillars: nature and wildlife, climate action, green economy and market transformation, food and water security, and civil society mobilisation. In addition, EWEC will come on board as an Observer to the UAE Alliance for Climate Action (UACA). UACA convenes non-state actors to accelerate science-based decarbonisation in support of the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative.

The announcement aligns with the Earth Day 2025 theme, "Our Power, Our Planet," and demonstrates how meaningful partnerships between the public and private sectors can accelerate decarbonisation, contribute to the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative, and empower communities to adopt more sustainable ways of living.

Ahmed Ali Alshamsi, Chief Executive Officer of EWEC, said: “Our collaboration with Emirates Nature-WWF represents a powerful step forward in aligning Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy leadership with holistic conservation efforts. A thriving natural environment is essential to a sustainable future and by investing in nature-based solutions alongside our ambitious decarbonisation initiatives, we are strengthening climate resilience, enhancing biodiversity, and driving meaningful impact across key sectors. This partnership reflects our shared vision for a more sustainable UAE, where renewable energy, environmental stewardship, and innovation go hand in hand.”

Laila Mostafa Abdullatif, Director General of Emirates Nature-WWF said: “A whole-of-society approach is critical to ensuring a resilient, nature-positive future. We welcome EWEC to the UAE Alliance for Climate Action, which convenes non-state actors to accelerate decarbonisation in the UAE, and to our flagship civil society mobilisation programme Leaders of Change. As a member of this programme, EWEC employees will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on conservation on the ground, helping advance both climate and conservation impact in this crucial decade of action.”

By integrating EWEC’s leadership in renewable energy and Emirates Nature-WWF’s expertise in science-based conservation, the partnership will support large-scale programmes that advance the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative while fostering long-term ecological and economic resilience.

To nurture a culture of environmental stewardship and provide employees with meaningful opportunities to connect with nature, EWEC will actively engage in hands-on conservation activities through Emirates Nature-WWF’s Leaders of Change programme—the UAE’s largest civil society movement for nature. By participating in expert-led workshops and conservation field trips, EWEC employees will contribute to transformative impact for both people and planet, directly supporting local conservation initiatives while contributing to national sustainability goals.

As a key driver of the UAE’s clean energy transition, EWEC is making remarkable progress in reducing carbon emissions and advancing sustainability at scale. By 2030, EWEC forecasts a 47 per cent reduction in carbon emissions compared to 2020 levels, driven by the rapid expansion of renewable and clean energy capacity, including a forecasted 10 gigawatt (GW) of installed solar PV by 2030 and 18GW by 2035. Additionally, more than 95 per cent of Abu Dhabi’s water production will come from low-carbon-intensive reverse osmosis desalination, further lowering emissions and enhancing water security. By supporting transformative initiatives with Emirates Nature-WWF, EWEC is ensuring that the UAE continues to set global benchmarks in decarbonisation and environmental stewardship.
