Abu Dhabi’s Clean Energy Momentum Grows with EWEC’s Q3 2025 Clean Energy Certificates Auction

Abu Dhabi, UAE, 7 August 2025

Increasing adoption of CECs highlights the growing commitment to sustainability across key sectors

Entities encouraged to register and verify their clean energy consumption to accelerate Abu Dhabi’s energy transition

EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company), a leading company in the integrated coordination of planning, purchasing, supply, and system despatch services for water and electricity across the UAE, today announced the opening of registration for its Q3 2025 Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) auction, scheduled to close on 16 September 2025. As demand for verified clean energy continues to rise across Abu Dhabi’s key economic sectors, EWEC encourages all eligible businesses, organisations, and individuals to register and join the emirate’s accelerating energy transition.

Since its inception, the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy’s (DoE) Clean Energy Certificates scheme has played a pivotal role in supporting Abu Dhabi’s energy transition by enabling organisations to verify their clean energy consumption. The Q2 2025 auction resulted in one of the highest volumes of CECs sold since the programme’s launch, highlighting the growing appetite among entities of the importance of verified clean energy consumption and its role in reducing carbon emissions.

The Clean Energy Certificates scheme, issued by the DoE, continues to gain momentum as CEC adoption reflects a growing commitment among Abu Dhabi’s organisations to adopt clean energy solutions that support their decarbonisation efforts and reduce Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions. EWEC plays a central role in enabling this transition, acting as the Single Registrant and Auction Operator of the scheme, while forging strategic partnerships that accelerate clean energy adoption and support the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative.

Francois Brice, Executive Director of Commercial and Fuel Management, said: "The rising uptake of Clean Energy Certificates demonstrates Abu Dhabi’s dedication to embedding sustainability within its core economic activities. EWEC is proud to provide a transparent and recognised solution that empowers businesses, institutions, and individuals to take measurable actions toward achieving their sustainability goals. We invite all entities to participate in our Q3 auction to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future and contribute to a sustainable legacy for future generations."

CECs are issued in units of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) and conform to the internationally recognised standard developed by the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard). These certificates serve as the only accredited instrument in Abu Dhabi to verify ownership of the environmental and economic benefits of consuming clean energy.

Businesses, individuals, and organisations in Abu Dhabi looking to accelerate their sustainability journey are invited to register for EWEC’s Q3 2025 Clean Energy Certificates auction. This is an opportunity to take measurable action toward emissions reduction and demonstrate leadership in the transition to a clean energy future.
