Leadership Team

Ahmed Ali Alshamsi serves as the Chief Executive Officer of EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company), following his appointment to the role in 2025. He has been a Board Member of EWEC since 2022. A skilled and forward-thinking leader, Ahmed is accelerating the energy transition utilising transformative technologies, overseeing the strategic direction of EWEC to ensure the security, efficiency, and sustainability of water and electricity supply across the UAE.  

Ahmed brings extensive experience in the development and management of world-class utility and infrastructure projects, fostering collaboration with public and private sector partners to advance the UAE’s renewable and clean energy agenda. His strategic vision is helping to future-proof the UAE’s utilities sector, enhance the integration of renewable and low-carbon technologies, and strengthen organisational capabilities to support future system requirements, all while cultivating the next generation of Emirati industry talent.

Prior to his role at EWEC, Ahmed held prominent positions across the utilities sector, expertly leading business development and special projects that helped drive the development of critical infrastructure assets, and portfolio management of sovereign wealth fund assets. 

Ahmed holds an MSc in International Development and Public Policy and a BA in Economics, both from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.

Ahmad Almulla serves as the Chief Digital Officer at EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company). He brings over 30 years of experience in Information Technology (IT) and business leadership, with a proven track record of driving technological innovation and transformation.

At EWEC, Ahmad is responsible for leading the development and implementation of the company's technology strategy. He leverages his expertise in IT infrastructure, applications, cybersecurity, and digital transformation to optimise EWEC's operations and support its strategic objectives. Ahmad's leadership is crucial to ensuring EWEC maintains a secure and efficient technology environment that supports its growth and long-term success.

Ahmad’s earlier career at Emirates Global Aluminium EGA (and its predecessor, DUBAL) spanned over two decades, during which he held various leadership positions in IT. Throughout his tenure, he championed numerous technological advancements that significantly enhanced the company's operational efficiency and positioned it for future growth. He has also advised CEOs of organisations including National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC) and Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC).

Ahmad holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of New England and a Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering from the University of Arizona. He has also completed executive development programmes at IMD Business School and the Mudara Institute of Directors.

Mohamed Almarzooqi is the Chief Assets Officer at EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company), with over two decades of leadership experience in the energy sector. He has held senior roles overseeing large-scale infrastructure programmes, strategic asset portfolios and long-term capacity planning across power and water systems in the UAE.

At EWEC, Mohamed provides executive oversight for the development and management of generation and desalination assets, including solar, thermal, reverse osmosis and battery energy storage technologies. He sets strategic priorities for future capacity needs, leads procurement and delivery of major projects, and ensures alignment with sector policy, regulatory requirements, and national sustainability objectives.

Prior to joining EWEC, Mohamed led multidisciplinary teams on major energy and infrastructure initiatives, working extensively with international partners, government entities, and investment stakeholders. He has been involved in a wide range of complex development activities, from conceptual planning and commercial structuring to operational governance.

Easa Alzarooni serves as the Chief Operations Officer at EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company). In this capacity, Easa astutely leads the scheduling and despatch of water and electricity from EWEC’s diverse and transformative generation fleet of water and electricity plants. In addition,  Easa oversees key elements of network operations, including interconnections with the Emirates National Grid (ENG) and the GCCIA Interconnection, ensuring a secure and reliable energy supply.

Under Easa’s leadership, EWEC’s operations have successfully navigated the UAE’s transition toward a cleaner energy future, era. He has been instrumental in managing the integration and despatch of new technologies, including solar photovoltaic (PV) and nuclear energy. An insightful expert, Easa brings over two decades of experience managing and planning electrical networks, and his expertise continues to enhance efficient operations.

Easa holds a BSc. in Electrical Engineering from UAE University, in addition to being certified by the University of Tokyo in Executive Management and the Harvard Business School in Advanced Management.

René Matthies serves as the Chief Financial Officer at EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company), where he is responsible for the strategic leadership of the company’s Finance, Tax, and Treasury functions. An experienced leader with expertise in the power generation sector, René oversees the development of EWEC’s long-term financial strategy and ensures the robust financial performance of the company’s water and electricity generation portfolio.

Since joining the organisation, René has played a pivotal role in strengthening EWEC’s financial resilience, driven sustainable financial growth, and optimised capital structure to strengthen EWEC’s leading role within the nation’s energy sector.

Prior to joining EWEC in 2019, René held a number of executive board positions within the international energy industry, working for E.ON, Vattenfall, and Accenture. His career spans over 10 countries, providing him with a unique global perspective on energy economics and utility management.

René holds an MBA from Passau University and was trained in executive development programs at Stockholm School of Economics and Duke University.

Dr. Faisal Obaid serves as the Chief Corporate Support Officer at EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company), implementing effective strategies that enhance Procurement, Human Resources, and General Services initiatives across the organisation.

Dr. Faisal’s effective development of governance frameworks, policies and procedures, facility security, service delivery, and operational processes has strengthened EWEC’s corporate support functions, ensuring seamless operations that drive efficiency, support strategic growth, and drive decision-making while fostering a culture of innovation and operational excellence.

Prior to joining EWEC, Dr. Faisal held senior positions in federal government entities, and at companies in the energy sector and banking sector, leading major initiatives in strategic planning, procurement transformation, IT governance, organisational development, and national talent development.

Dr. Faisal holds a PhD in Technology Philosophy from UTHM University in Malaysia, an MSc in Applied Science Management from the American University of Sharjah in the UAE, and a BSc in Engineering Systems Management from the Higher Colleges of Technology in Abu Dhabi. He is also a certified international trainer and manager and holds numerous professional certifications in procurement, quality management, strategic planning and business development.

Laura Thomson serves as the Chief Legal Officer at EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company). Under Laura’s legal guidance, EWEC has been able to adeptly negotiate and close complex projects and partnerships.

Laura has enabled EWEC’s pursuit of forward-thinking strategies designed to diversify the UAE’s energy mix and support its economic growth. She has extensive problem-solving experience, having spent more than a decade in the Gulf region. Her knowledge and acumen have contributed to EWEC’s pre-eminent position as a leader of change within the sector.

Prior to joining EWEC, Laura served as the Head of Asset Management for the UAE at ENGIE. She has also held directorships in ten companies, giving her a wide breadth of expertise in the energy sector in the UAE and Bahrain.

Laura holds an LLB (Hons) in Exempting and LPC from the University of Northumbria, as well as a Masters, LLM in Oil and Gas law at the Robert Gordon University.
