Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) is the sole procurer of water
and power within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and beyond, with the mandate to
ensure the supply of water and power to consumers. EWEC is part of ADQ, one
of the region’s largest holding companies with a diverse portfolio of major
enterprises spanning key sectors of Abu Dhabi’s non-oil economy. EWEC was
formed in November 2018, succeeding the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity
Company (ADWEC).
To support UAE demand for water and electricity, we procure supply from 16
plants across the UAE (12 current and four in the near future), including
conventional power plants as well as two solar power plants, one of which is
the largest single-site solar power plant in the world.
The Saadiyat Island RO Independent Water Project will consist of a standalone greenfield reverse osmosis desalination plant to be located on Saadiyat Island.
The Khazna Solar Photovoltaic (PV) project is a greenfield renewable energy project, similar in size and scale to Al Dhafra Solar PV. Once fully operational, the plant will generate 1.5 gigawatts (AC) of electricity, increasing Abu Dhabi’s solar capacity to 5.5 gigawatts.
Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Power Project
Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Power Project
The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project is a 400-megawatt power project that will provide operating reserves and add flexibility to the system. BEES will play a crucial role in improving the system's operability and enhancing overall network stability.
Taweelah C Independent Power Producer (IPP) Project
The Taweelah C Independent Power Producer project is a Combined Cycle Gas Turbine plant located in the Al Taweelah Power and Desalination Complex. The carbon-capture-ready project will primarily provide transitional capacity to support the integration of renewable energy projects and to provide additional flexibility.
Taweelah C Independent Power Producer (IPP) Project
Madinat Zayed Independent Power Project (IPP)
Madinat Zayed Independent Power Project (IPP)
Located in the Madinat Zayed area, 120 kilometres Southwest of Abu Dhabi City, the Madinat Zayed Independent Power Project (IPP) is an Open-Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) plant. The project will provide transitional capacity to support the accelerated integration of renewable energy into the system.
The Al Sila Wind Project is a major wind power development in Abu Dhabi, with a generation capacity of up to 140 megawatts (MW). The project supports the UAE’s energy transition by supplying renewable electricity to the national grid, contributing to the country’s sustainability and decarbonisation goals.
Zarraf Solar PV is one of the world’s largest single-site solar power plants, with a generation capacity of 1,500 MW (AC). The plant will supply clean, renewable electricity powering approximately 160,000 homes and reducing CO2 emissions by up to 2.4 million metric tonnes annually. This landmark project is a significant step towards achieving EWEC’s target of increasing Abu Dhabi’s solar power capacity to at least 10GW by 2030, contributing to the UAE's energy transition and decarbonisation goals.
Round The Clock (RTC) Project in Abu Dhabi is the world’s first large-scale, combined solar power and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), delivering 1 gigawatt (GW) of baseload power every day. Featuring a 5.2 GW (DC) solar PV plant and a 19 GWh BESS, it will provide continuous, clean energy 24/7. This groundbreaking project supports the UAE’s Energy Strategy 2050 and Net Zero by 2050 goals, setting a global benchmark in renewable energy innovation and ensuring reliable, sustainable power for emerging technologies.
Al Dhafra OCGT is a 1 gigawatt (GW) Open-Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT) project developed by TAQA in collaboration with EWEC. This project, part of a larger energy infrastructure plan, will support the achievement of the UAE National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031 and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative.
