Al Shuweihat Power and Water Complex is located in the Al Dhafra region, approximately 250 kilometres from Abu Dhabi City. The Shuweihat Power and Water Complex, which consists of three plants (two combined power and water plants, and one power plant), generating a combined power capacity of 4.6 gigawatts, and 910,000 cubic metres per day.
The Shuweihat S1 Independent Water and Power Project (IWPP) comprises a greenfield power generation and water desalination facility in operation since 2004, with a power generation capacity of 1.5 gigawatts (GW) and 455,000 cubic metres per day. Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) owns 60 per cent of the plant, with ENGIE and Sumitomo each holding 20 per cent.
The Shuweihat S2 IWPP is the second plant developed in Shuweihat, Abu Dhabi, and was initially tendered in July 2007. It is a gas-fired facility with a power generation capacity of 1.5GW and a water desalination capacity of approximately 455,000 cubic metres per day. TAQA owns 60 per cent of the plant with ENGIE holding 20 per cent, Marubeni 10 per cent, and Osaka Gas 10 per cent.
The Shuweihat S3 Independent Power Project is a combined-cycle power plant, with a gross power capacity of 1.6GW. The plant comprises two power blocks consisting of two Siemens SGT5-4000F gas turbines, one SST5-4000 steam turbine and two dual-pressure heat recovery steam generators (HRSG), each with bypass stack. TAQA own 60 per cent of the plant with Sumitomo and KEPCO holding 20.4 per cent and 19.6 per cent respectively.
As part of EWEC’s strategic initiative to decouple Abu Dhabi’s power and water generation capacity while reducing the cost and carbon footprint of seawater desalination, EWEC is developing the Shuweihat 4 RO plant. Once complete, it will produce up to 318,000 cubic metres of potable water per day.
