The Shuweihat 4 Reverse Osmosis (S4 RO) Independent Water Project will rapidly expand low-carbon-intensive water desalination production, supporting UAE Water Security Strategy 2036, UAE Energy Strategy 2050, and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.
The project will be located adjacent to the existing Shuweihat 3 plant, within the Shuweihat Power and Water Complex, which is approximately 250km West of the city of Abu Dhabi.
S4 RO will desalinate seawater using low-carbon-intensive RO, to supply up to 318,000 cubic metres per day, improving the security of supply and accelerating the decarbonisation of water production. Low-carbon-intensive RO water desalination plants are up to 96 per cent more efficient than traditional thermal desalination plants and enable a more than 85 per cent reduction in carbon emissions associated with water production.
Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) will own 60 per cent of the project, with the remaining 40 per cent stake to be held by GS Inima.
Commercial operations for the project are expected to begin in Q3 of 2026.
