EWEC Celebrates Emirati Women's Pivotal Role in Leading Abu Dhabi’s Energy Transition

Emirati women occupy key leadership positions across EWEC, shaping the future of Abu Dhabi’s energy sector


EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company), a leading company in the integrated planning, purchasing, supply, and system despatch services for water and electricity across the UAE, on the occasion of Emirati Women’s Day, honours the exceptional contributions of Emirati women who are shaping the future of Abu Dhabi’s water and electricity sector. From accelerating the integration of renewable energy to advancing low-carbon-intensive water production and grid reliability, Emirati women at EWEC are at the forefront of one of the most ambitious energy transitions in the world.

EWEC is focusing on empowering Emirati women and, over the last year alone, has facilitated a more than 20 per cent increase in Emirati women leading key operational functions. EWEC currently employs Emirati women across strategic functions, including Assets; Corporate Services; Digital; Finance; Legal and Governance, Risk and Compliance; Operations; and Strategy and Growth.

Aligned with this year’s theme, "Hand in Hand, We Celebrate 50 Years” which marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the General Women's Union in 1975, EWEC continues to invest in the development and advancement of Emirati women through structured leadership pathways, technical upskilling, and mentorship programmes. These include targeted career progression initiatives, strategic project exposure, and specialised training in areas such as system operations, reverse osmosis (RO) water desalination, renewable energy integration, grid optimisation, and techno-economic planning, ensuring Emirati women are equipped to lead the next phase of the energy sector’s transformation.

Emirati women at EWEC are instrumental in accelerating the UAE’s energy transition. Across critical functions, they are helping to decarbonise water and power production by advancing utility-scale solar PV, wind power, and low-carbon-intensive RO desalination projects, while supporting the integration of clean energy into the grid through operational excellence and system reliability. Their contributions directly enable the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy’s Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035 for Electricity Production in Abu Dhabi, and reinforce national progress toward the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.

Beyond operational delivery, Emirati women at EWEC are shaping policy-aligned strategies, leading data-driven decision-making, and embedding innovation across the organisation. Their leadership in complex, high-impact initiatives strengthens EWEC’s ability to deliver a secure, sustainable, and efficient energy system, serving communities, empowering industries, and supporting the nation’s long-term socio-economic priorities.
