EWEC and Al-Futtaim IKEA Launch Clean Energy Partnership to Power Stores with Renewable Energy

Abu Dhabi, UAE, 8 May 2025

All four Al-Futtaim IKEA stores in Abu Dhabi to be powered by renewable energy from EWEC

EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company), a leading company in the integrated coordination of planning, purchasing, supply, and Al-Futtaim IKEA, the leading Swedish home furnishing retailer in the region, have announced a strategic clean energy partnership to reduce emissions and advance sustainable business operations in the UAE.

Through this partnership, EWEC will provide Al-Futtaim IKEA with Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) to cover 100 per cent of the electricity consumed across its four stores in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), CECs are the only accredited instruments in Abu Dhabi that certify electricity consumption is sourced from renewable and clean energy generation. This milestone marks a significant step forward in Al-Futtaim IKEA’s efforts to reduce scope 2 emissions and operate in a more environmentally responsible manner.

The partnership reflects a growing movement among private sector leaders to align with national decarbonisation goals and contribute meaningfully to the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative. As organisations increasingly seek to embed sustainability into their core operations, the use of CECs is proving to be a credible and transparent way to measure and verify clean energy usage.

Francois Brice, Executive Director of Commercial and Fuel Management, said: “Our partnership with Al-Futtaim IKEA highlights the critical role that corporate leadership plays in accelerating the UAE’s clean energy transition. By sourcing 100 per cent of the electricity for its Abu Dhabi stores from renewable energy, Al-Futtaim IKEA is setting a clear example of how environmentally conscious business decisions can support broader national sustainability targets. At EWEC, we are committed to enabling decarbonisation across all sectors by providing access to internationally recognised Clean Energy Certificates that support real emissions reductions and deliver verified environmental impact.”

Vinod Jayan, Managing Director of Al-Futtaim IKEA UAE, Qatar, Egypt & Oman, said: “The UAE is well underway to achieving its clean energy transformation, backed by ambitious visions including its Energy Strategy 2050 and Net Zero 2050 Strategy. We’re pleased to be partnering with EWEC in further contributing to the nation’s progress. EWEC has already, time and again, proven their dedication to a clean energy future, and therefore we are confident in the success of this partnership.

We recognise how transparency and credibility are non-negotiables when it comes to truly implementing clean energy. And, that aside strong support from the UAE’s leadership, corporate leaders hold a critical responsibility in helping achieve wider missions through smaller, yet consistent actionable steps. Through this agreement, we look forward to continuing to make real progress and deliver verified impact.”

Issued by the DoE in units of one megawatt-hour (MWh), CEC certificates comply with the internationally recognised standards of the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard) and verify ownership of the environmental and economic benefits derived from renewable or clean energy consumption.

CECs allow both companies and individuals in Abu Dhabi to make credible renewable and clean energy claims, measure progress against sustainability targets, and contribute meaningfully to the decarbonisation of Abu Dhabi’s economy.

This partnership marks another step in EWEC’s ongoing efforts to expand the adoption of renewable and clean energy across diverse sectors, supporting a wide range of organisations in aligning their operations with the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative and the DoE’s Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035 for Electricity Production in Abu Dhabi.
